Where Hope and Opportunity Unite
Education impacts a child’s future in a crucial way. It is the key for a child to grow out of poverty.
Not All Children Go To School
Can you imagine having to drop out of school because there is not enough money to pay for your education? What if parental pressure forces you to work? It’s unthinkable, isn’t it?
During the 2013-2014 school year there was full enrollment of students aged five to 12, but it was a different story for those aged 13 to 17 where only 54% attended school. (INEE)
At least 21 percent of all Mexican youth between the ages of 7 and 14 give up school because they are forced to work. (UNESCO)
Those are staggering drop-out rates!
Here’s another sobering statistic.
- 36% of schools in Mexico have no sewage/drainage systems
- 24% of schools aren’t connected to any municipal water system
- 10% of schools have no bathrooms
- 8% of schools have no electricity
- 7% of schools have no computers for educational purposes
- 82% of schools have no Internet access
The role of schools is to prepare students for a productive future. Considering that the majority of homework needs to be accomplished using the internet, the lack of computers and internet in the schools puts a huge burden on children who come from poverty to complete their assignments.
How To Keep Kids In School
Poverty is identified as one of the main reasons children drop out of school. It’s difficult to stay in school when money doesn’t stretch far enough to pay for school supplies, uniforms, shoes, tuition and bus fare. Yet, some of the children do exceptionally well academically despite their home situation.
Staying in school is the key to a better life. Education is an effective way to reduce poverty and inequality. For this reason, Care for Kids La Paz has established a scholarship program to give these kids a powerful opportunity to better their lives so that they can rise out of the grip of poverty.
Children are eligible for a scholarship in junior high or high school with an 8.2 grade point average or higher out of 10. They must work hard and keep up their grade point average. We have asked the students to commit four hours a month to do community service of their choice. It helps them realize that they are citizens who need to be aware of social concerns and “to give back” to the larger community. It also leaves them with a sense of dignity. Because the scholarship benefits not just the student but the whole family, we’ve also asked that the families contribute a few hours of time each month.
Length of Sponsorship
Sponsorship will continue throughout junior high and high school as long as the child fulfills the requirements of the scholarship program. We make every effort to help the students succeed, but there are times when, sadly, we have to discontinue the scholarship. Sponsors would be notified of these changes. We would hope that sponsors would consider choosing a new student. If for any reason sponsors can’t continue their commitment of sponsorship, Care for Kids La Paz would continue to assist the child until another sponsor can be found.
Sponsorship is a dynamic way to build a relationship between you and the child you would like to help. It presents an extraordinary opportunity to delve deeply into another culture and support the important work of educating a child. When you sponsor a child, you will receive letters three times a year and a picture of the student. We encourage sponsors to write their student. The students love receiving letters. They also love when sponsors visit them and their family.
Estimated Cost Per Year
- To keep a child in junior high: $500.00 USD ($42.00 a month)
- To keep a child in high school: $500.00 USD ($42.00 a month)
This includes tuition, uniforms, school books and supplies, school shoes and gym shoes, bus transportation and whatever else we think is necessary for that child to succeed at school. Won’t you consider making a yearly or monthly pledge or having a group of friends sponsor one student? If you don’t want to sponsor a child but would like to support the scholarship program, we gratefully accept all donations.
For only $1.65 a day, you can help keep a student in school. Because every child deserves to have a future.
